Petrobras raised average jet fuel prices to distributors by 13.9% in early September 2026, pushing the cumulative 2026 increase to 53.3% above December 2025 levels. The state-run Brazilian oil company blamed rising international aviation fuel prices tied to Middle East geopolitical tensions.

The price hikes come on the heels of a strong second quarter. Net profit surged 96.8% year-on-year in Q2 2026, while adjusted EBITDA climbed 70% sequentially and net debt fell. Refinery utilization ran above 100%, oil production hit record levels, and exports increased. CEO Magda Chambriard told analysts the company would 'very likely' exceed its full-year 2026 oil production forecast.

Wall Street took notice. On September 1, JPMorgan maintained an Overweight rating on Petrobras shares traded on the NYSE under the ticker PBR and raised its price target from $23 to $24. The bank cited compelling valuations for oil companies amid higher crude prices and called Petrobras a clear leader, pointing to highly profitable upstream operations and robust cash flow. Bradesco BBI separately upgraded the stock to Outperform.

For Brazilian airlines and passengers, the 53.3% cumulative fuel increase this year means sustained pressure on ticket prices and airline operating margins. Distributors absorb the initial hit but typically pass costs downstream quickly.

Looking ahead, BNamericas raised the question of potential asset sales if opposition politician Flávio Bolsonaro wins the presidency, though no sale plans exist under current management. For now, Petrobras enters the final stretch of 2026 with strong financials, upgraded analyst ratings, and a fuel pricing trajectory that shows no sign of reversing.
